Mentoring and Advocacy Services
Dyslexia Scotwest has a team of volunteer who offer advocacy and mentoring services to members on a case by case basis. These volunteers have been trained to assist and support dyslexics, parents, teachers, and others in need of assistance. Situations where mentoring or advocacy may be appropriate are:
- Accompanying parent to meetings with schools
- Assisting to fill out forms or help deal with a government agency
- Helping determine what types of technology might be suitable to assist dyslexics at work / in the home
- Helping dyslexics to access services and assistance
- Providing support in making changes at work or undertaking a new endeavour
Mentoring and advocacy services are designed to directly help people who may have specific problems or difficulties to deal with those problems as quickly and easily as possible. Our mentors are not counsellors and we will not provide this form of support. Instead they will attempt to help people to make practical changes that will improve their lives.
Due to resource constraints mentoring is necessarily short term, with mentors helping people to make changes in their lives. We cannot offer ongoing mentoring over extended periods of time (ie, more than a few months).
This service is restricted to Dyslexia Scotwest members. Non-members can access mentoring services by joining our organisation as a member (to do this click here). We also reserve the right to deny mentoring services in situations where we feel it to be appropriate.
For more information on accessing mentoring services, or if you are interested in becoming a mentor yourself, telephone 0141 331 2121.
